Meet #TeamDevine: Stephan Narweski, our Caretaker
This week for #MeetTheTeam we want to shine the spotlight on a person who is critical to the every-day running of our hospice. Over the last few months he has been tirelessly working to keep the hospice safe, secure, well-maintained and ‘ready to go’ when Day Care starts again.
This is Stephan Narweski, our Caretaker and all-round hospice hero!
Stephan has been in the hospice virtually every day during lockdown keeping things going – answering calls, taking deliveries, deep cleaning, painting, fixing, watering the gardens and always with a huge big smile!
“The Hospice has been so quiet over the past few months. I really miss the laughter and the hustle and bustle of the children and staff and all the volunteers that come in to help.
As the caretaker I look after the building ensuring that everything is in good working order and undertake or arrange necessary repairs or maintenance. But during lockdown my role has definitely diversified!
One of the biggest challenges over the last few months has been ensuring that the hospice is a safe, clean environment for the Alexander Devine team who still need access. The measures we need to put in place have changed constantly. We have been without a housekeeper, so as well as my other responsibilities I have taken on more cleaning duties to make sure specific areas are cleaned regularly and to a high standard.
It is great news that now lockdown is easing we will soon be able to reopen our hospice to children and families. More than ever, I know it is critical that the building is a safe environment for them so we will be taking all the necessary steps and precautions.
For me, the best part of my job is working alongside a dedicated team that all strive for the same goal, which is to ensure that we can continue to support seriously-ill children and their families. I feel very privileged working for Alexander Devine and seeing all the hard work by all the staff and volunteers, a lot of it behind the scenes.
It’s been so humbling to see the amount of support and donations, including PPE, that our charity has been given over the past few months. It is truly amazing.”
Need our help?
The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.
Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
