Alexander Devine’s Big Chick Knit, Spring 2026
The Big Chick Knit is back at Alexander Devine by popular demand! Each year, incredible knitters from the local area make hundreds of adorable knitted chicks and Easter-themed friends, each with a chocolate egg inside. The chicks and friends are then sold out in the community to raise vital funds for our children’s hospice service.
How can you get involved?
Knit or crochet for us
Get those knitting needles or crochet hooks ready to create as many chicks and friends as you can manage.
Our deadline for receiving chicks is the 16th February.

Collect or donate chocolate eggs
We need hundreds of chocolate eggs for our chicks and friends. Each chick and friend needs a chocolate egg, these need to be Crème Egg size to fit inside the chick.
We are always looking for new places across our local area to collect these eggs, if you would like to organise a collection then please do let us know so we can send you everything you need.
Buy your chicks or help sell our knitted friends
When it’s time for the chicks to fly the nest, you can purchase your very own unique chick. These will be for sale out in the community or you can purchase them via our online shop.
Chicks will be available to buy from Monday 2nd March 2026.
Alternatively you can request a box of our chicks and friends to sell out in your community; these are very popular in offices, schools or local shops as well as lots of other places across the community. And 100% of the money raised from these adorable knitted friends goes directly to our charity, making a huge difference to the children and families we support!

Volunteering opportunities
We are so grateful for any time and support you can spare for The Big Chick Knit, but if you would like to continue supporting our campaign once the knits are made, there are plenty of ways to do so!
We’ll need help with…
- Egg Taxi drivers – We need ‘Egg Taxi’ volunteers to pick up the chocolate eggs in their area, kindly donated by companies, schools and other organisations, and drop them off at our children’s hospice in Maidenhead.
- Egg filling – Filling thousands of chicks isn’t an easy task! We need volunteers to fill and prep chicks in the run up to Easter. We can arrange ‘filling sessions’ at our hospice, or at a group near you to ‘get filling’!
- Chick hospital – Unfortunatly, some chicks we receive need a few repairs from their travels. Our chick hospital needs volunteers to stitch our chicks back to good health either at our children’s hospice in Maidenhead or at home – sewing skills will be needed!
- Chick delivery – As well as picking up eggs, we need volunteers to deliver boxes of ready-to-go chicks from our hospice to venues all across Berkshire. If you have a venue near you that you think would be a perfect place for our chicks, please let us know!
Need our help?
The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.
Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire, South Bucks and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
