Celebrating Sibling Bonds at Woolley Firs with BBWOT

On Saturday 28 September 2024, Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice organised a special Siblings Day at Woolley Firs Environmental Education Centre near Maidenhead. This event offered a wonderful opportunity for the siblings of the babies, children, and families we care for to come together, bond, and create memories in nature.

Siblings of children with complex needs often face unique challenges. These days are vital in giving them a space to connect with others who understand their experiences, to have fun, and to feel part of a supportive community. The day at Woolley Firs perfectly captured this spirit, blending learning with outdoor adventure.

The morning began with a peaceful nature walk through the trees. Guided by the knowledgeable team from the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), the children learned how to identify various tree species, exploring the environment in a new and exciting way. They were encouraged to engage all their senses – touching the bark, smelling the leaves, and listening to the rustling sounds of the woods.

Next, there was a fascinating session about moths. The children were introduced to a variety of species and even had the opportunity to hold some, including the impressive Convolvulus Hawkmoth, a highlight for many! Seeing such beautiful creatures up close was both educational and awe-inspiring.

After a packed morning, the group enjoyed lunch together, giving everyone a chance to chat and relax. In the afternoon, the fun continued with pond dipping, where the children explored aquatic life, discovering tadpoles, water beetles, and even a few frogs. It was an activity that sparked curiosity and excitement, with plenty of laughter as they competed to find the most interesting creatures.

This day wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated support of BBOWT, and we are incredibly grateful to Clare Hegarty, who led the activities, ensuring the day ran smoothly. Our heartfelt thanks also go to our wonderful play specialists, Liz Johnson and Gemma Wood, who brought their energy and creativity to help make the day truly special.

Days like this remind us of the importance of community and shared experiences. We have many more Siblings Days on the horizon to continue offering these moments of joy and connection. If you are engaging with us and want to sign up to a future day like this, please do get in touch at care@alexanderdevine.org.
