Burning Bright: Alexander Devine Joins Wave of Light for Baby Loss Awareness Week

In a touching tribute to the many lives lost too soon, Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service joined the global ‘Wave of Light’ campaign on 15 October 2024.

As part of Baby Loss Awareness Week, team members from Alexander Devine gathered in the peaceful surroundings of the hospice to light a candle in remembrance of babies who are no longer with us. This beautiful and poignant event allowed families, staff, and supporters to reflect and honour those who hold a special place in our hearts but are no longer with us.

The global event encourages people to have a candle lit at 7pm local time around the world and ensure it stays lit until at least 8pm. Our decision to light the candle this afternoon enables us to observe this with the main body of our staff present, and keep the candle lit into the evening.

This annual event is part of Baby Loss Awareness Week, which aims to break the silence surrounding pregnancy and baby loss, offering families a space for reflection and remembrance. Read more about the annual observance here.

A Moment of Reflection at Alexander Devine

The hospice’s Wave of Light event was led by Sue Carter, Family Support Worker at Alexander Devine, who has long been involved in supporting families through their most difficult times. Sue expressed her pride in bringing the event to the hospice, sharing the importance of creating a safe space for reflection and connection during Baby Loss Awareness Week.

“We are proud to be part of the Wave of Light”, Sue commented. “It offers a chance for families, staff, and friends to come together in remembrance. The candle represents not just the loss but the light that each of these babies brought into the world, however briefly. I hope this campaign and the moment of reflection it provides helps families know they are not alone in their grief, and that here at Alexander Devine, we are always here to support them.”

The event was open to all families who have experienced the loss of a baby, as well as staff and supporters who wished to pay their respects. In the tranquil hospice reception, the soft glow of the candle created a moment of unity and hope in the relaxing environment, helping families to feel connected with others across the world marking this important day.

Supporting Families Through Grief

At Alexander Devine, we understand that the loss of a child at any stage is an unimaginable pain. Our team, led by dedicated professionals like Sue, is here to offer emotional support and a space for families to navigate their grief. We offer extensive bereavement support to the families that engage with our hospice service as part of what we do.

Baby Loss Awareness Week, which runs from the 9th to the 15th October in 2024, raises awareness of pregnancy and baby loss in the UK, encourages open conversations, and highlights the support services available to families who have experienced such loss.

As we continue to support families on this journey, we are grateful to all those who joined us in the Wave of Light. Together, we will keep the memory of these precious lives shining bright.

Need our help?

The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.

Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
