12 Days of Christmas: Eight Families Supported

As the festive season approaches, we are reflecting on the incredible families who are at the heart of everything we do at Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service. On day eight of our 12 Days of Christmas series, we celebrate eight families who have shared their experiences and the unique ways we have supported them this year.

Each story highlights the resilience, love, and joy that shines through even the toughest of times.

“It is a lifeline for us.”

For one family, Alexander Devine was a constant source of support throughout their journey. “Knowing there is someone to turn to, who understands what we are going through, has been a lifeline. The team always finds a way to bring a smile to our faces, even on the hardest days.” Whether it is through respite care or a simple conversation over a cup of tea, the hospice is there when it matters most.

“The sensory room is his favourite place.”

Another parent shared how much their child loves visiting the sensory room at the hospice. “He lights up every time we come. The colours, the lights, and the sounds make him so happy. It is a space where he feels safe and calm, and seeing him so content means everything to us.” The sensory room is one of many ways we create magical moments for families.

“The sibling days are amazing.”

“Our daughter loves the sibling days,” says one mum. “She has made friends who understand her, and she has had experiences she will never forget. The team creates such fun and meaningful activities, and it has made a huge difference to her confidence.” Sibling support is an essential part of what we do, ensuring brothers and sisters also feel cared for and celebrated.

“Music therapy has brought joy back into our home.”

For one family, music therapy sessions have been transformational. “Our son loves music, and these sessions have given him a way to express himself. It has brought so much joy back into our home. We find ourselves singing together again, something we thought we had lost.” Music has the power to heal, and we are thrilled to see how it touches lives.

“The community events mean so much.”

A family shared how the hospice’s events have helped them feel connected. “The community events are amazing. Whether it is a summer fair or a Christmas gathering, they remind us that we are not on this journey alone. It is so comforting to meet other families and share experiences. The events are full of joy and laughter, and they have become a big part of our lives.”

“We are not alone in this.”

Another family spoke of the relief they felt knowing they had a support network. “Before we found Alexander Devine, we felt so isolated. Now, we know we are not alone. The team has been there for us every step of the way, offering kindness, understanding, and practical help. It has been life changing.” This sense of community is at the heart of what we do.

“The garden is his happy place.”

The outdoor spaces at the hospice provide a sanctuary for many families. “He loves being outside in the garden. Whether he is watering flowers or watching the birds, it is his happy place. It is a space where we can all relax together and enjoy the little things. The garden has become such an important part of our lives.” Nature has a special way of healing and bringing people together.

“Christmas feels magical again.”

Finally, one family shared how the hospice has brought the magic of Christmas back into their lives. “Last year, we felt so overwhelmed that we struggled to celebrate at all. But this year, the Christmas activities at the hospice have reminded us of the joy of the season. Seeing our children laugh and play has been the best gift we could have asked for.”

Creating cherished memories is at the heart of our festive celebrations.

As we reflect on the messages and positivity our families have shared with us, we are calling on our community to support our Christmas Appeal. This campaign is the heart of our festive season, helping us bring joy and comfort to the children and families we care for.

Every donation makes a difference, whether it’s funding a therapy session, helping us provide respite care, or simply making a child’s Christmas a little brighter.

Please consider donating to our Christmas Appeal and sharing the spirit of giving. Visit www.alexanderdevine.org/christmas to make your contribution today.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has fundraised, volunteered, or donated this year. Your support means the world to us and the families we support.

As we reflect on these stories, we are reminded of the strength and love within our Alexander Devine community. Each family’s journey is unique, and we feel privileged to walk alongside them. This Christmas, we celebrate the bonds we have built and the moments of joy we have shared. From all of us at Alexander Devine, we wish you a season filled with love, hope, and togetherness.

Need our help?

The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.

Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
