12 Days of Christmas: Ten Staff Success Stories

Each day at Alexander Devine is a testament to the love and dedication of our team. Today, for day 10 of our 12 Days of Christmas series, we hear from (at least) ten of the people who make our hospice a place of hope, joy, and support.

Emily O’Hagan, Alexander’s Nurse

“I have been here for five months now, and I absolutely love the variety in my role. From working in the hospice to visiting families in their homes, every day is unique. What I love the most is making a real difference and advocating for our children and families.”

“My first day working in the hospice stands out – I spent it supporting a child at a pool party, playing games all day. I could not believe this was nursing! Of course, there are challenges, like knowing I cannot fix everything for our families, but I know we are always giving our very best. I am so excited to keep building these special relationships. This truly is the best job ever.”

Nicole Woodfield, Community and Events Fundraiser

“I have been part of the team for just over a year, and it has been a joy to meet so many wonderful people. No two days are ever the same at Alexander Devine, and I love working with our incredible volunteers and staff at events throughout the year.”

“One of the biggest challenges is raising the money needed annually to keep our services running, but it is so rewarding when everything comes together. I am already looking forward to next year’s Tree Recycling service and annual curry night. They are both such different events but equally fantastic in their own way!

Tai Bishop, Lead for Corporate and Community Partnerships

I have been here for four years and have loved every moment of it! Growing up in this community, I saw the hospice being built, so it is an honour to be part of its story. I love working with our supporters – each one has their own inspiring story to share.

Highlights of my time include our Heaven Sent Ball, partnering with Volvo Car UK to receive our first electric vehicle and last year’s magical Christmas Party at LEGOLAND Windsor. Fundraising can be tough, especially convincing organisations to fund core services like nursing, but it is so vital. 2025 is going to be an exciting year, with new challenge events and our first overseas trek on the Camino de Santiago trail.”

Warren King, Director of HR

“I have been at Alexander Devine for six years, and it has been a privilege to witness the team’s growth and the impact of our services. The best part of my job is the people. Every day brings new challenges, but it is the variety that keeps things interesting. I am looking forward to the year ahead and all the wonderful plans in the works – though perhaps a little rest would not go amiss right now as Christmas is chaos, in a good way, of course!”

Emily Lowden Cox, Alexander’s Nurse

“I have been here for over four years, and it is the most rewarding role I have ever had. Building relationships with the children and families we care for and going above and beyond to create special memories is so meaningful. One moment I will never forget is organising a visit from farm animals for a child who was too unwell to leave home.”

“Our job can be emotional and challenging, but the care team is so supportive, and we truly look after each other. I look forward to continuing to provide this vital care and hopefully reaching even more families.”

Mark Fawkes, Marketing and Communications Manager

“I joined Alexander Devine in September and already feel so inspired by the diversity of my role. I get to tell the stories of the children and families we support, as well as everything we do in fundraising, therapy and beyond.”

“Highlights include the Santa Dash – 500 Santas running through Windsor was an organised chaos I loved! Prioritising stories and resources can be a challenge, but I am excited to keep learning and be even better prepared for next year’s events.”

Jenni Green, Lead for Trusts and Supporter Engagement

“I have been here for five and a half years and was thrilled to see my department grow as we welcomed Lorraine. Working on the Christmas Appeal with Elikai and his family was an honour – it was wonderful to be trusted with their story.”

“Though financial challenges lie ahead, I look forward to coming up with even more creative and innovative ways to connect with supporters and continue making a difference in 2025.”

Louisa James, Finance Assistant

“In nearly five years at Alexander Devine, I have come to see how unique this place is. From the laughter of children to the smell of baking wafting through the hospice, it is always full of life. My favourite days are when the hospice is bustling with activity, reminding me why what we do is so important.”

Lara Carbonaro, Alexander’s Nurse

“I joined in January and so am just coming up to one year in post. I have loved seeing the impact we make in our families’ lives. From daycare to respite care, every little act makes a big difference. I am proud of our team and how we support each other to provide the best care. Watching children achieve new milestones is so rewarding. While we are stretched at times, we remain committed to reaching even more families in need.”

Jackie Grant, Family Support Counsellor

“I joined the team in April and was immediately struck by the empathy and care of the team. This year, we started bereavement support groups for families, which is a passion of mine. Challenges are opportunities for growth, and I take inspiration from the resilience of the families we support. I am excited to offer new group support for adults in 2025.”

Jess Hatchett, Corporate Fundraiser

“It has been just one month, but I already feel at home. The team is incredible, and I am excited to work with our corporate supporters to bring their ideas to life and raise vital funds. Here is to a wonderful year ahead!”

Need our help?

The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.

Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
