12 Days of Christmas: Two Hours with Yvie

The magic of the festive season can often be found in the simplest of moments. At Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, one of the most heartwarming highlights of the holiday period is our two-hour visits with Yvie, our wonderful therapy dog.

Yvie, a golden retriever with a heart as warm as her fur, has become a cherished member of our hospice family. Every visit from Yvie is met with smiles, laughter, and an undeniable sense of calm.

Whether it’s a moment of cuddles in our sensory room, a lively game of fetch, or simply watching her friendly curiosity as she explores alongside the children, Yvie has a remarkable way of lifting spirits.

Yvie’s Play Sessions: A Time for Joy

Every visit begins with anticipation. The staff and children eagerly await Yvie’s arrival, their faces lighting up as they hear the jingle of her collar in the hallway. These two-hour play sessions are designed to create moments of happiness, connection, and comfort.

Whatever the activity, Yvie instinctively knows what each child needs, offering boundless affection and understanding.

Yvie also makes time for the siblings and families of the children we care for. Her visits bring a sense of unity and joy to the entire hospice, creating shared moments that families can treasure.

Parents have often commented on how Yvie brings a sense of normalcy and playfulness that is so valuable during challenging times.

The Healing Power of a Dog’s Love

Research has long shown the benefits of therapy animals, especially for children with complex needs. For many of the children at Alexander Devine, Yvie provides more than just companionship; she helps reduce anxiety, promotes sensory engagement, and encourages interaction in a way that feels natural and fun.

Paul, Yvie’s dedicated owner and volunteer, describes her visits as “a chance to bring light and love into the lives of children and families who deserve it most.” Watching Yvie in action is a reminder of the small but profound ways we can make a difference in someone’s day.

A Christmas Appeal Full of Hope

This festive season, Yvie is one of the many ways we bring comfort and joy to the children and families who rely on us. But we can’t do it without the generosity of supporters like you.

Our Christmas Appeal is vital in helping us continue to provide care and support throughout the year, including these cherished therapy dog visits.

Our Christmas Appeal centres around Elikai, a brave three-year-old boy, and his family, who we support through the toughest times, and asks, “Could YOU be the key to unlocking a magical Christmas for Elikai?”

Your support can help us create more magical moments like a couple of hours with Yvie. It ensures that families facing the most difficult circumstances have access to the care, joy, and comfort they need – not just at Christmas but all year round.

Need our help?

The word hospice should not seem scary and getting support from us doesn’t have to mean a child’s death is imminent. Helping to enrich the lives of the children and their families is at the heart of our service, our end of life and bereavement support is just a part of what we do.

Our children’s hospice service covers the whole of Berkshire and into surrounding counties. If you think your child may be eligible for our services, please do get in touch.
