12 Days of Christmas: Six Music Sessions

Whether it’s tapping out a rhythm, singing our hearts out, or simply listening to soothing melodies, music has a magical way of bringing people together. At Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, music isn’t just background noise – it’s a source of connection, comfort, and creativity for the children and families we support.

So, for the sixth addition to our 12 Days of Christmas series, let’s take a look at six reasons why music is such a big piece of the puzzle for children, and why music matters so much.

Music is a Universal Language

You don’t need words to understand music. Whether it’s a cheerful jingle, a calming tune, or the giggles from a tambourine mishap, music speaks to everyone, no matter their age, abilities, or challenges. For the children we support, it becomes a bridge to express feelings that words sometimes can not.

Music Soothes the Soul

Imagine the soft hum of a lullaby or the gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar. It’s not just calming; it’s transformative. For children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, moments of stillness and calm are invaluable. Our music sessions often create these magical pockets of peace, offering children a chance to relax and feel comforted.

Music Boosts Mood

Feeling festive? Play a carol! Feeling blue? Put on an upbeat tune! Music has an uncanny ability to change how we feel, almost instantly. During our music sessions, it’s not uncommon to see a shy smile turn into a full-blown giggle as little hands clap to the rhythm.

Music Sparks Creativity

From banging on drums to writing lyrics, music encourages creative expression. Our brilliant music therapist always says there’s no wrong way to make music – every sound is part of the masterpiece! For children who may face physical or cognitive challenges, creating music gives them a powerful sense of accomplishment and individuality.

Music Creates Memories

A certain song can instantly transport you back to a special moment. At the hospice, music sessions often become treasured family memories. Whether it’s a Christmas singalong or a spontaneous dance party, these moments create lasting bonds. For families, they’re snapshots of joy to hold onto forever.

Music Brings People Together

Picture a family gathered around, singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” while little ones shake bells in time to the beat (or not!). Music unites people in ways few other things can. In our Children’s Hospice, music becomes a shared experience that draws families closer, even amidst the challenges they face. It reminds everyone that they’re not alone.

Music at Alexander Devine: A Year-Round Gift

While this blog celebrates the magic of music, particularly at Christmas, it’s a gift we share with our children and families all year long. Thanks to our music therapists and creative activities, we see firsthand how melodies bring smiles, heal hearts, and strengthen bonds.

By donating to the Alexander Devine Christmas Appeal 2024, you can be the key to unlocking more of these magical experiences for our Christmas Star, Elikai, and children like him who are supported by Alexander Devine, and their families.

This holiday season, why not add a little music to your celebrations? Whether it’s singing carols with your family, making homemade instruments, or dancing around the tree, let the joy of music fill your home.

Give the Gift of Music

You can help us keep the music playing for the families we support by donating to Alexander Devine. Every penny helps us provide these life-changing sessions and spread a little extra joy.
