A Magical Day at Alexander Devine: Santa’s Grotto and Sensory Story
On Saturday 21st December 2025, Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service transformed into a festive wonderland, as children and families gathered for our annual Santa’s Grotto and Sensory Story event. It was a day filled with joy, creativity, and magic, bringing smiles to the faces of all who attended.
The event began with an invitation to step into Santa’s Grotto, a cosy and enchanting space adorned with twinkling lights, garlands, and the cheerful sounds of Christmas music. Santa himself took centre stage, warmly greeting each child and making them feel special.
With the help of their families, children had the chance to post letters to Santa, many of which were crafted with care at the writing station earlier in the day. Each letter brimmed with wishes, both big and small, as children’s imaginations soared in anticipation of Christmas morning.
Alongside Santa’s Grotto, the hospice was alive with activity. In one corner, children delighted in decorating cookies. With icing in every colour and a variety of sprinkles to choose from, their creativity knew no bounds. Little hands worked carefully to create edible masterpieces, many of which were proudly shared – or promptly tasted!
Nearby, a crafting area offered endless opportunities for artistic expression. Wooden shapes became canvases for children to paint and embellish with glitter, stickers, and ribbons. The crafts table was a hub of laughter and chatter, as families worked together to create keepsakes that would bring a bit of festive cheer home.
For those with a flair for drama, there was a chance to play Elf to Santa. Dressed in cheerful costumes, children stepped into the role of Santa’s trusted helpers, delighting in the chance to spread Christmas cheer. The playful interactions between Santa and his ‘Elves’ brought laughter and warmth to everyone present.
Additionally, the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust provided various fun activities for the kids and families to explore their wild side before a lovely lunch which all the families enjoyed immensely.
The highlight of the event was the Sensory Story session, held in the hospice’s beautifully decorated lounge. This special activity was designed to bring the magic of Christmas to life for children with sensory needs. Through tactile props, soothing lights, and calming sounds, the story unfolded in a way that was engaging and inclusive. Families watched as their children’s faces lit up with wonder, making the experience deeply moving for all.
The Santa’s Grotto and Sensory Story was a perfect celebration of the season. It captured the spirit of Alexander Devine, creating moments of joy, connection, and inclusivity for families who are navigating challenging journeys. The hospice team would like to thank all the staff, volunteers, and families who came together to make the day unforgettable.
As we reflect on this magical event, we are reminded of the power of community and the beauty of shared experiences. From all of us at Alexander Devine, we wish you a peaceful and joyful festive season.
