16 year old Neve had her first seizure when she was just four months old. At 18-months she was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, which is usually characterised by multiple and frequent seizures that are resistant to drugs.
Neve had more than 60 emergency hospital admissions before the age of three and it continues to be a constant struggle to manage her seizures. Alongside her epilepsy, Neve has severe learning difficulties, autism, mobility issues including poor coordination and difficulties with eating.
“Neve’s condition has affected our family in every possible way. Neve has seizures every day. We continually assess her safety wherever we are, as seizures can happen at any time, day or night, and often with absolutely no warning. She has many different types of seizures, and they are changing all the time.
Caring for a child with complex needs, like Neve, is exhausting and rewarding in equal measure. Being under the care of the hospice service means that we can take some time to catch up on sleep, chores or see friends – it’s absolutely priceless.”

Neve loves to read her favourite books, do jigsaws, play hide-and-seek with her soft toys and simple games like snap. Neve adores animals so holding the animals at the hospice’s Easter family fun day brought her huge enjoyment and she talked about it for days afterwards. Neve absolutely loves hydrotherapy and being in the water brings her so much joy. She can only swim in a hydrotherapy pool as differences in air and water temperature in a regular pool trigger her seizures. She loves music, especially nursery rhymes, so enjoys music therapy at the hospice too.
