Spring of Smiles

Help us create a Spring of Smiles for the 200+ children and families we care for at Alexander Devine, children like Isla.

Isla’s first moments were far from easy. Starved of oxygen at birth, she needed to be resuscitated, and as a result of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), she sustained a life-changing brain injury. Now, seven-year-old Isla lives with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy.

Isla requires 24/7 care. She cannot sit or stand independently, is non-verbal, tube fed, and unable to use her arms and legs effectively. Despite these physical challenges, Isla is cognitively aware and understands far more than she can express, which can be frustrating.

When Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service became part of Isla’s life, something changed. Isla began enjoying hospice day care, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and family fun days, while her parents received vital support and respite. Isla now loves visiting the hospice, where she enjoys swimming, baking, playing on her favourite swing, and having her nails painted, all while receiving the specialist care and support she needs.

“The support from Alexander Devine has given us hope. It‘s wonderful to be able to trust other people with our precious daughter, and it gives us such peace of mind & reassurance that our daughter is well looked after and having fun. Having a break makes us better parents as we’ve had the chance to recharge our batteries, even just a little.”

– Debbie, Isla’s Mum
